My job role changed to designing the train livery, I had had some ideas about how the train would look before and so I thought that I could try this.
I began my drawing the train by drawing over a high speed train in illustrator.
I then began to apply the design to the front of the train I started by applying the blocks along the side of the train and then adding the black shapes which came from the insides of the logo, I felt that the transition between the black and white was too harsh against each other, I also think that a lot of white was dated.
I then tried having the logo mark larger in the centre or the train with more black but I also felt that this looked strange.
I then tried the boxes larger and smaller a combination, I quite liked the large boxes but they are a bit less clear.
I then looked into reversing the colour from the original image and making the shapes white from the logo instead of the reverse.
I then changed the whole background to black, this looked a lot more modern and sophisticated I also arranged the boxes so that they ran in one main area and then split up and joined again focussing on the idea of coming together, and I think that this works better for the logo and makes it clearer.
I did this by having the colour palettes next to the boxes and selecting each box at a time and then eye dropping the colour.
I then drew the front of the train as well I was happy with the results as it added more dimension instead of being 2D.
I liked the last idea I had had and I left the logo in a similar position as it aligned well with the wheels of the train I also built up the boxes from a central point and dispersed out.
The coloured boxes therefore run along side the train and meet up at the logo variations, I also placed the start and end logo in centre of the front and end carriages and then spaced out the two logo variation left in-between, which meant they both end up on the middle carriages, which I think gives this carriage more interesting.
The colour blocks merge into each section so that they look like they are joining together and changing into one another.
I really like the effect it has on the train and I think that the gradients of the logo variations really stands out. Also as well as this it works well together and I think when the train moved the colours would flash past.
I also had a go at the interior of the train I found an interesting image on google of train sets that swivelled around so that you could see out of the window, I though that this could transition into our concept with the idea of being able to see more.
I drew over the image which was a photograph and made it into a vector so that I would be able to manipulate it more. It took me quite a long time to do this but I was pleased with how I had done the drawing I wanted the train to incorporate the identity of the brand but I felt that it was bit grey.
I tried to incorporate some of the brand, I didn't want to be overbearing so I tried to add smaller details on illustrator and on photoshop, however I felt it looked flat and didn't match the train illustrations.
I also then applied the design to the front of the train, keeping it simple so that you can see the web address and balancing out the busy sides of the train.
I am happy with the illustrations of the front and side of the train, however the interior we won't be using as it isn't consistent, but I was happy with how well I had drawn it.
I applied the logo to the very front of the train just to signify capital north again.
