Self Evaluation and Group Evaluation

Self Evaluation and Group Evaluation

The brief carried out over one day pushed my ability to produce work in a short space of time, and I liked the final result and its concept of a stay-cation. We worked in a group of six which in hindsight may have been a few too many and there was more ideas to debate. But as I had a tutorial for half an hour the morning of the workshop I wasn’t present for the main discussion about the concept. I think that when I returned some tensions had begun and it had out some people off doing the work but I felt that they should of moved past it and carried on with the group. I liked the concept but discussed it further with the group to get an idea on tone and audience.

We had decided to aim the magazine at more affluent young or mature professionals who had maybe got commitments of a dog or children that could not necessarily go on holiday at a whim, and so the magazine would look at new and perhaps trendy places to stay and the sights to go see around that in the island that is the UK, including Scotland and Wales, not Northern Ireland as it would require a ferry or plane and this goes against the point of the magazine. The other idea was that it may be for these types of people to encourage them to go on weekend breaks over a full holiday so that they don’t interfere with busy work schedules.

I was given that task of designing the front covers alongside another group member, Caitlin and I think what we came up with looked really high end. Upon critique in the presentation it was suggested that this was too minimal, but looking towards magazines such as Intern that have a niche market I felt that maybe it was an appropriate style as it was meant to be different.

In the group I enjoyed my role and I was given it due to my design being heavily editorial it was logical to give me this job. I am also good at sourcing interesting imagery, I wasn’t aware of this at the time but from doing further briefs and placement I have been asked where I have got certain imagery from and to me it seems normal but it is apparent that I have a skill for this. I will continue in all of my work to use this to my advantage.

However I felt that people where fighting over roles and as there wasn’t that many to offer some people where a little bit stranded, however I feel like some members got involved and put themselves into doing a job and asking to be put in that position and I admired them for doing this, as some other members had appeared to have really just given up and did not contribute to the work and at the end of the day Caitlin had been left with a task that one of the others could have been doing but had instead just laid back, which meant our presentation wasn’t as well put together and so if I was to go back I would have probably made these people aware of this, or I would have done the presentation myself as I am more savvy with the technicalities of putting it together and exporting it properly, and not using it from the memory stick in the presentation!
